When I parked my car I saw what I thought at first was a leaf and it was a copper colored snake slithering down a street in San Francisco! Years ago I would have had a heart attack and even though I was kind of freaked out I continued down the street to the school I worked at !
I am a Sf native born and raised and outside of seeing them at the aquarium it was the first time I have ever seen a snake in San Francisco slithering down the street. Ive seen coyotes, gophers, raccoons and squirrels but never a snake.
I hope it wasnt an omen!

(28,087 posts)In my life, just about every female (wife, daughter, sisters, gfs) had a thing about snakes. All negative, Not sure why. Is it my sample size?

(3,121 posts)My beloved older cousin had an indigo snake he brought to show us young ones. Gorgeous deep blue back and an orange underbelly. He explained it was harmless and let us hold the snake. That was a long time ago, but I have never feared nonvenomous snakes. I've touched pythons as well. Never had a close encounter with a poisonous one except for a scare at age 8 by almost colliding with a copperhead while sliding down a hill of fresh dirt. It gave little traction for stopping, but I pretty much levitated up that hill and made a beeline for home.
At that age, I wasn't at all sure it hadn't tracked me home and might be coiled in wait if I ventured outside. But that was before I met the indigo snake and learned that many snakes were homeless.

(2,177 posts)They are indigenous to the region and not poisonous, but they are also somewhat endangered due to habitat destruction. Some have been raised as pets, but they are not really ideal as such.

(9,175 posts)All within 10 ft of my house. I have a snake catcher so I will catch and move the baby snakes a mile away but not the big ones. I usually chase them away with a hose. They hate cold water. I think it messes with their body temp.
We should get our first freeze in a few days - so I hope I dont see anymore till spring.
In the past, Ive been bitten, one of my dogs has and a neighbors dog on my land was bitten.
