The day after Halloween when I went in to pick up a prescription and saw all the women around one candy counter I knew it was time. Mounds.

That's the ice cream I always finish, or eat more of than I planned.

(again Hudsonville) Strawberry with Hershey's syrup.

Followed closely by Java Chocolate Chip.

Brown sugar, cinnamon and ginger, and vanilla--trying to keep simplicity. I used organic half and half and it came out wonderfully lush and flavorful.

Years ago Dryers made Dutch Chocolate that was deep chocolate & not too sweet. Then they discontinued it. Recently I found Private Selection Chocolate Ganache that is even better!! Same dark chocolate, not-too-sweet, but creamier! Probably more calories, too, but so worth it!! In the summer, keep a bottle of peppermint schnapps in the freezer & pour a shot or two over the ice cream for a PERFECT peppermint/chocolate treat.

Never had anything like since, but I can still taste it. Mmmm good.

It’d be easier to name ice cream that I don’t like. One of which is an entire brand, which I won’t name, that needs to revamp its freezing process. The ice cream is interspersed throughout with tiny ice crystals that give it a ‘gritty’ mouthfeel. I also don’t like fruit flavors that are discernibly artificial. Waxy, tasteless chocolates are another turnoff.

On my recurring playlist lately have been mint chocolate chip, black cherry, peach, and moose tracks. I could subsist on those for awhile.

Turkey Hill's Neopolitan triple berry is great too (blueberry, strawberry. black raspberry!)

The flavor comes from the orchid Vanilla planifolia. I have one growing in my sunroom. I have to cut it back every so often because that sucker is VERY vigorous.

Heaven in the mouth. I'm talking actual home made sauce, not that canned abomination.

Haven't actually seen it offered anywhere since I was a kid. And patronized local purveyors of fine frozen dairy-based products.

Only nostalgia, I guess, but good nostalgia. Bonus: don't have to worry what level of lactose tolerance I'm capable of when it's an ice cream that exists in memory: )

In Michigan…

Got a black walnut tree in my backyard…come on over next year and grab a few hundred pounds. Last mast year we took over 50 wheelbarrows full out to the pasture.
