(Feel free to include a hint or two)
"Why don't you open the door and let your soul through
Why don't you open the door to see what's real
Well if you open the door, you may become you
You'll know what you feel"

(7,893 posts)that TYA usually played; being more melodic and lyric driven. Alvin Lee passed in 2013, drummer Ric Lee (no relation) and keyboardist Chic Churchill still perform with the band.
An Alvin Lee story was that he had the MNPM of any guitar player! (Most notes per minute)

Clues:
Huey Lewis plays the kickass harmonica solo, and John McFee (Doobie Brothers) plays lead guitar and vocals
The band played backup for Elvis Costello's 1977 debut album - My Aim Is True

(29,777 posts)The Rowan Brothers?
(I think they were from Marin County)
Brother Buzz
(38,158 posts)although Peter Rowan played with another Marin County band, Jerry Garcias band, Old and in the Way.
My wifes brother ran with one of the brothers way back in his banjo days.
Another band clue:
When the band recorded with Elvis Costello they were under contract with another label so they changed their name to The Shamrocks on the album credits. The Shamrocks is a really clever clue if you know what a shamrock is.

(17,930 posts)don't know the name of the artist--so I'm abstaining for now. But I think it even inspired a movie of the same name. But I'm not sure...
ON EDIT: Nevermind, I was totally wrong. I thought it was "Take This Job and Shove It."

(40,786 posts)The group was pretty popular in a small part of the country but had a few songs make the charts 50ish years ago.

Yes I'm a punky girl
I never say die
No one can stop me

(4,422 posts)You know old Ronnie Reagan
He was a shoe salesman's son
He got himself in the movies
Yeah, he impressed everyone
He thought trial by fire
Was America's fate
He made a joke of the poor people
And that made him a saint
But he was tan enough, he was rich enough
He was handsome like John Wayne
And there was no one at the country club
Who didn't feel the same
But it's a, it's a little uncanny
What he managed to do
Got me to read those Russian authors through and through
