So I got carded yesterday in Stop & Shop, trying to buy a six pack of Dutch beer. I turned 85 last September.

When my checkout person rang up the beer, he said "I'll have to see your ID," I thought he was joking.

Nope.

My biggest worry was how I was holding up the line, while I was digging around in my purse trying to produce my drivers license. People get pretty P.O'd when they have to stand in a line. I apologized to the man behind me, waiting. The folks behind him were also wondering what the hell was keeping the line from moving.

Today in my bank I told that story to the young teller helping me. He and his fellow (young) tellers were all getting good laugh and one of them said "Yeah, that's bad" sympathetically.

Fun time for this old lady...

Manager told us to "proof" anyone who looks 40 or under. Reason why: The store got caught selling alcohol to someone under 21 without asking for proof of age. Corporate has hefty fines because of it. So, new rules . . . .

Everyone gets carded no matter how old they look. If the state stops by to see if they are checking…say buy a six pack and don’t get carded bad things will happen to the store!

I’m 72 and it’s been awhile since I’ve been carded. I’d struggle to find my dumb too. I should start carrying my LCB card from college days, with the photo of my 21 yr old self on it. That would make them look twice

You don't get any senior discounts on anything at that store. It would screw up the lines royally. I feel pressure from folks in the line if I have discount coupons. I use just a very few, if any, because of the time it takes. I'm sure the store is aware of this and must weight "customer satisfaction" surveys they do and know that people HATE long lines. Stores hate to have more clerks ringing up orders and have a section just for self-checkouts. It's just too laborious for me so I don't do it.

8. Store policies vary on when to card

If they have been fined or warned, the stricter the policy. My local rite aid cards everyone no exceptions. Cameras are pointed at the cashier and if caught not carding it is immediate termination. Some stores scan your ID or drivers license.
They are just doing there job. Where I work the policy is if they look under 40. You would be surprised how many do not carry their drivers license and how angry they get when you have to refuse the sale. It is the law that ID is required to buy alcohol.
What I don't get is why it is my fault they drove to the store without their drivers license.

9. Oh, I always have my license in my wallet when I go anywhere. I wouldn't drive without having it.

My issue was the carding, but since it is store policy and there is a liquor store near me, I'll just go there.

I can buy de-alcoholized Merlot there and I like that brand because I get the taste of Merlot without the alcohol. Sometimes on special occasions I will drink the real wine but usually just one glass. I feel that I am too old to drink wine at dinner any more. I dunno how the Europeans do it when they get old!

Now mind you, much of my hair is nearly white and though I look young for my age I do not look 21!
If I have to show my license for DOB, the clerk often does a double take.
I take it in stride and laugh about it - I think it is pretty funny.

They have to add my dob to the register before totalling up the purchase

Back around '04 I attended a conference on data analysis techniques. Basically, a mathematician conference, but I was more an end user with an interest in the theory.
Anyway, I don't know anybody there, and there is limited networking value. So, I decide I'll just get carry-out each night & eat in my room.
I go to this local gas station to buy a 6 pack of beer.
Now, at this point I'm not yet 50, but I've legal for 30 years.
Lady at the register asks me to ID. I show it to her and she apologizes, but she crushed it with the line "Well, I'm 82; to me everybody looks too young to drink." I thought was funny & outstanding.
BTW: at our local supermarket, I get carded every time, even though they all know me. Here's the kicker, I buy ZERO ALCOHOL beer! I get it when I'm buying wine for cooking, but carded for 0.0% beer?
