I was going to a dentist that told me I was just fine for the past few years. I had to wait two years to get an appointment!
Then he abruptly retired!
I found another dentist to go to and OMG! I've needed several fillings and two crowns and no, they don't use gold any longer from crowns I was advised.
One tooth had five surfaces fixed and four more had cavities that were "missed".
Seems the dentist has Alzheimer's Disease and he didn't notice!
I have one more filing to deal with this and *gulp* two crowns next year.
If I did not have insurance, this would have cost me abt. $5,000+.
My late husband had seven teeth left when he died, SEVEN!
So, I better get them fixed up before no one takes my insurance any longer (it is Delta Dental and they seem to be having big problems -- everyone with a contract with them wants more $$$$$$ of course). I have Delta Dental at a cost of $11.00 a month because of my Union negotiated health coverage.
All Americans deserve dental care and money should not be a requirement to have it! It should be a given!

(21,170 posts)I'll have to admit that the five surface one was A BIT MUCH. *eek*
It looks all new and fancy as do the other ones that were fixed.
Three to go!
You don't want a dentist w/Alzheimer's Disease!

(21,170 posts)They are adjacent to one another. Seems that many of the old silver amalgams have got to go. Cost is $1750.00 each for titanium.
The insurance I have will pay for a lot of them but that is it for the entire year!
Once you go through $2,000.00 there is no more insurance and yes, I pay for this every month as does my former employer.
Universal indeed!

(6,935 posts)There is nothing to be done for it. I had dentures and they never were comfortable enough to use on a regular basis. But, they were part of my medical assistance program and were basically cheap ones. Now, I am missing more teeth and they look stupid. I would love implants.
HAH!
Dentists know that the new implants will remove a lot of their business so they are making sure the damned things are VERY expensive.
So, I eat soft stuff. I have like three molars so chewing is not easy. NO one cares of course. I am not rich, so dentists will not see me. I also have Delta and it is... flimsy at best. I suspect we will be getting rid of it soon anyway, as it is also part of the 'too expensive for most people' trend that is growing in this country. I am well aware that this is part of why no one will give me the time of day. The fact that the majority of this society is still so completely into the 'Greek Ideal' that they would ignore me solely because of my teeth is just more evidence that we have truly become a nation of shallowness and ignorance.
And, partly why I don't have a lot of hope for us.

(5,258 posts)After years of no cavities, my dentist discovered four of them over the course of a year. Fortunately, the past three or four examines have been quiet. It scared me straight in my dental hygiene habits that's for sure. My parents both had awful dental habits and lived their golden years with nary a tooth in their heads. I don't want that happening to me.

(21,170 posts)Just about anyone that is "old" has a few silver amalgams. They last a long time but not forever. Then they turn into crown time.
These crowns cost a bundle!
I may get off for abt. $300.00 each if I am lucky, I don't know yet.
I have one more filling left on the lower left side. Five cavities were taken care of on top. The two I had the other day were small ones and it only took a few minutes to take care of those.
I'll admit it, since my husband died, I've found solace eating a lot of hard candy from Winco. Cheap junk! No more of that!
These "golden years" aren't so golden!
