(23,779 posts)The year my daughter was 9, (1993) our social chairman decided we needed a great fun thing which included our kids. So she entered us in the Fort Worth Parade of Lights Christmas Parade. The theme for the parade was "The 12 Days of Christmas" The only requirement was every float or group had to had lights on it/them. (all of us wore those little battery operated mini light strings )
So we decided we were going to BE the 12 Days of Christmas - all of them! We had a flatbed hooked to a truck, decorated it with lights and greenery for all the small kiddos with some moms to keep the little ones on the flat and standing up in the middle was one of our members who was quite pregnant and wearing a bird suit.
The Partridge in the Pear Tree....
FOllowed by"
Two Ninja Turtle Doves (a pair of 9 yr old boys in Ninja Turtle outfits)
Three French Men (3 members dressed up like French men with berets, etc) They said "Oh it was supposed to be HENS?)
Four Calling Birds Four women with handsets from princess phones, dialing and talking
Five Golden Hula Hoops Five women with gold spraypainted hula hoops
Six Geese A a laying: Straw wreaths around their waists, with large fake eggs glued on
Seven Swans A Swimming: Feather boas and snorkel gear of course
Eight Maids a Milking Milkmaid outfits - 6 women and 2 men - and the men were in hilarious drag. We had an extra character: a woman in a cow suit
Nine Drummers.. toy snare drums and band hats
10 pipers... bubble flutes
11 ladies dancing: All of our girls wore their recent dance recital outfits and high kicked it all the way with cartwheels
12 Lords a Leaping A row of our men, wearing white longjohns with red and green silk boxers over them. When we sang the song they would all jump up together and yell "LEAP!" (the purpose this group was two fold: 1. being silly with the theme along with the rest of us and 2. Making sure none of the dancing girls got separated from us. In all our subsequent parade appearances, the "Back Row" of these 12 men became a fixture.
We won First Prize in the Walking Unit Division. We still sing it every year in our class the Sunday before CHristmas, and we act out our parts. We are often joined by our kids and their kids to sing carols and eat Christmas cookies. (We did the parade 3 more times and won first place in 2 of them)
We marched in the parade 3 more years, and collected two more First Place Ribbons.

(10,175 posts)I remember learning "I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas" when I was seven years old, and I always signed up for the choir and glee club in elementary and high school. On the other hand, Elvis Presley's version of "Blue Christmas" is probably the worst rendition of any song ever by anyone. Actually, I don't like that song at all. A sad song has no place in a joyous season.

(10,181 posts)Thankfully I dont think they play that one as often as they used to.
Unnecessary covers - Happy Xmas War is Over I only want to hear the John and (off-key) Yoko version. Same with Last Christmas - the song is bad enough as it is but only George Michael should be singing it.

(30,067 posts)...followed very closely by the utterly inane Dominic one, as well as Grandma Got Run Over.
All 3 of these are as noxious as the universally reviled Kars For Kids commercial.

(18,690 posts)Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer -- it was amusing the first, maybe even the second time you hear it.
Little Drummer Boy.
But... Isn't anybody here going to defend the Chipmunks song, "Christmas, Don't Be Late?"
That is the greatest song! My sisters and I used to bond over that song every Christmas. It's just so cute. I never get tired of it. (Also, be aware there are two versions--the perfect original and some newer fake version that is just a little bit off.)
And you know the part where David scolds Alvin for being "a little flat"? I've listened so carefully and I don't think Alvin is flat. I think it's just a power move by Dave because Alvin is the "star" and it's gone to his head.

(16,565 posts)brought me close to ripping the radio out of the dashboard and throwing it out the window. About the same for the grandma song. But the one that really annoys me is Lennon's Christmas song that happens to be a blatant Stewball ripoff; he had more than enough talent to create his own melody, and whenever that song comes on the radio I sing the lyrics to Stewball.
Having said all that, I'm one of those who genuinely loves Christmas music, and time of year doesn't matter. We grew up with parents' collection of 78s, and they were played every holiday season until I started high school in the '60s. Since then I've acquired my own collection, many found at thrift shops. And if I'm having a bad day in July I'm likely to bring myself out of it by listening to those vinyls. An absolute favorite: Gustav Holst's Christmas Day.
Merry happy, y'all!

(15,675 posts)But a few on my hate list
Christmas Shoes
Baby, It's Cold Outside (not even sure how that became an Xmas song - raising the possibility of roofying a drink isn't very festive)
Anything by Michael Buble just because I hate him
Ditto for Harry Connick, Jr.
Also I want to find Pentatonix and slap them over and over while yelling, "Leonard Cohen's, 'Hallelujah,' is NOT an Xmas song!"
What bugs me is that one song seems to be the one that's picked every year by the two stations that do Xmas music in Kansas City to play to death, and obviously they're watching me to see when I get in my car to start playing it. Feliz Navidad, Santa Baby, Santa Don't Be Late, etc. have been some of the ones in the past.
