Friday Night Vodka Buzz. Ask me anything.

Two shots to get the party started. Now a Jamaica Glow. Rum, gin, red wine, and orange juice.

Not wild about it. Probably won’t have it again.

I love you all…

How would I know otherwise?

I prefer that to not trying something I would have loved if I did.

Maybe this is a little heavy for a Friday Night Buzz thread, but I didn't see you in the thread below and I bookmarked it to get your feedback:

Do you agree with the idea of warning labels? And what's your philosophy on things that might raise your risk of cancer? Everything in moderation, of course, but would you alter your drinking habits because of this? Or would you argue that some things are just worth it because they bring such pleasure/enjoyment?

8. Well, there are different kinds of warning labels.

Those that seek to inform the consumer of something important. And those that seek to avoid lawsuits. ( “Do not stick fork in electrical sockets.”)

Retail packaging of alcoholic beverages already come with warning labels. And I’m cool with that. My grandfather (a heavy smoker) died of lung cancer at seventy. My father, not a smoker, died of pancreatic cancer at sixty-eight. So I don’t like my chances of living a long life.

So I’m going to enjoy my time while I can.

My mother’s side of the family routinely live into their nineties or to a hundred. But they are long gone in dementia by then.

I don’t know my fate. So I drink to what may come…

My mom's side of the family is riddled with cancer. She died of lung cancer that metastasized into bone cancer at age 64.

My dad's side dropped like flies from heart disease, quite a few in their 60s. My pops followed the pattern, suffering a major coronary at 51 but he survived thanks to a quadruple bypass. He had a couple more heart attacks and a couple of stents inserted. Then came bouts of AFIB and he had to be shocked back into rhythm a few times.

So he died of a heart attack, right? Nope! He developed lung cancer and it metastasized into bone cancer, exactly the same as my mom but eight years later. He was 72.

I turn 52 at the end of this month. I've been remarkably healthy all my life but I know the odds are stacked against me. Even though I have avoided smoking, which they both did for much of their lives, genetics are so hard to overcome.

I saw a documentary about the president of the American Heart Association or some such organization. His father died of a heart attack in his 60s. His dad had ALL the bad habits, smoking, heavy drinking, greasy foods, seldom exercised. So the son vowed to lead a healthy lifestyle and avoid his father's fate. Sure enough, the son still suffered a heart attack in his 60s and only survived because his daughter, a nurse, was in the elevator with him when it happened and she administered CPR immediately.

When the Grim Reaper has your number, you better hope your medically-trained offspring are there on standby. Otherwise...

Enjoy your drinks, Aristus!

But you’ve had some pretty inspired concoctions!
Tonight I tried a ginger margarita- it was pretty good! I got a ginger liquor and am starting to try the recipes that came with it. This was the first one; but then again I’m a sucker for margaritas of any stripe- it’s the lime juice ☺️.

We have a bottle of gin—Isolation Proof, Spring Gin.

Its label lists BOTANICALS: Ramps, Juniper, Coriander, Watercress, Tarragon, Grapefruit Peel, Lemon Peel, Orange Peel, Leeks, Green Onions, Licorice Root, Cinnamon, Honey, Cubeb.

My impression: as soon as I uncork the bottle, and no matter what I’ve tried to mix with it, it has a serious aroma/scent/smell of raw garlic. I cannot imagine how I can incorporate this into an appealing cocktail.

Any impressions or feedback will be appreciated.

Have a great Friday session!

Only that if you do not like the ingredients named in a cocktail recipe, don’t make it for yourself.

Life is too short to consume things you don’t like.

all that appealing. Although, I do use orange juice when making my mulled wine.. I wonder how the Glow would taste if it were heated?

Decisions, decisions. . . should I use fresh orange peel to garnish my mulled wine, or the lovely candied orange slices from Trader Joe's? Or both, along with a Penzey's cinnamon stick?

I have really enjoyed having this time off. It has cured my burnout. BTW, we Americans really need more mandated time off from work.

OTOH, I miss the challenge and the fulfillment of clinical medicine. I miss helping people and feeling useful.

It dates from the middle 1600s. One ounce lime juice, 2 ounces sugar syrup, three ounces strong rum, four ounces water. The original recipe: One of sour, two of sweet, three of strong and four of weak. If you are serving Royal Marines it should be four ounces of rum.

Wolf. Tomorrow is my birthday and I will have the rare privilege of having a Rhodesian Sewage.

I was worried it might be made with Jägermeister, which is just basically licorice-flavored sewage.
