I was 17 and had no clue what was going on. And it was one of those weird things I always thought about until I read a bio on Brooks about 5 years ago and learned of the lawsuit. Mystery solved! That Hollywood Squares episode of 50-51 years ago stayed with me.

Brooks laughed about it.

Then I remember the wonderful chain gang singing scene, Mongo, and "I'm tired of being desired!"

Even late night shows were funny back then!

And Benny Hill! Those were the days!

Benny Hill rebelled in his misogyny, that was his schtick. He was a one trick pony, a creepy fucking old guy, as I recall him from my youth.

Blazing Saddles is social satire. The misogynistic scenes are making fun of the overt misogyny in those old Hollywood westerns. I thought it was the funniest shit I ever saw.

I was introduced to both Blazing Saddles and Benny Hill around the same time, about 12 your 13. I instinctively understood the difference between the show that revolved around a lecherous geezer and the spoof of every Hollywood westerns, which were misogynistic wet dreams (so to speak).

The scene when the new sheriff was introduced and the crowd was silent and then the word came out.

The “motorcycle gang” with handlebars coming out of their pistol belts because motorcycles hadn’t been invented yet.

“Chewing gum on line, eh? I hope you brought enough for everybody!” “I didn’t know there was going to be so many!” (Hedley shoots dead the gum chewer.) “Boy, is he strict!”

“Hey boys! Look what I have here!” “Hey! Where all the white women at?”

“Badges? We don’t need no stinking badges!”

“Crime?” “Stampeding cattle.” “That’s not much of a crime.” “Through the Vatican?” “Kinky! Sign here!”

“How many times have I told you to wash up after a weekly cross burning?” (Turns over Bart’s hand.) “See? It’s comin’ off!”

“We’ll head ‘em off at the pass!” “I hate that cliche!”

Clevon Little should have won an Oscar. Wilder should have as well.

A great decade for satire, Monty Python, Mel Brooks and Carrol O'Conner in Archie Bunker.

"Hey, where the white women at?"

Pryor was a writer for the film, and was supposed to have the part that went to Cleavon Little. Even Mel Brooks couldn’t convince the film financiers to let him have the part.

I would like to see him deliver those lines Cleavon did well, but not Pryor-level well.

He suggested Cleavon Little, saying something to the effect that the contrast would play better in the film.

Little rocked the performance, of course. As good as Pryor could have been, it was perfect casting.

in making a choice of actors. The right thing to do.

Whatever interview I saw, it said Richard couldn't get his language by the censors, which is plausible so they went with Cleavon, and it all worked great anyway.

Methodists! ! !

There is a scene in which Hedley Lamarr is engaged in a monologue. All the while he is fondling a female statuette. My friend and I were howling with laughter and the rest of the audience had no idea why.

And Mel Brooks the Jewish Indian chief speaking Yiddish.
