(10,270 posts)If I could move to another country I would, but (so far) not just any country that would take me. I love England and wish I'd ever thought about moving there. Now, I have no skills they don't already have there and I don't have a lot of money, so there's no way to obtain citizenship. Who knows if they'll be Brexity enough to eventually elect their own Pissolini, but at least they don't have one taking over their country now.

(195 posts)Debit cards are OK, but do not buy what you can't afford.
Keep a prudent reserve set aside in case of emergency.
Monthly payments are OK on a house or a car, but you Don't need a McMansion or an expensive car, just a reliable one.
Never try to keep up with the Joneses.
Children don't need everything they see on TV. You can get them presents without breaking the bank.
You'd be surprised at some of the nice things that can be found at yard sales and second-hand stores. Also, look for repos at the furniture stores - I bought a repossessed china cabinet in perfect condition for only $200 cash when the new ones were going for $800 and up.
Stay as far away from the Stock Market as you can possibly get.
Find out Before you get married if your prospective spouse has good money sense and agrees with you on all this.

That said, basic math skills are extremely important to making financial decisions.

(189,230 posts)My uncle told my mom this years ago. Shes very fiscally disciplined but she had to be. Thats basically 6.2% of your gross.
