Our Aussie, Finley, does something similar when we walk. If he smells something really really interesting he gets on his belly so we can't easily move him away from the wonderful smell. If the smell is over a larger surface, he crawls on his belly to get in all of it and prevent us moving him before he wants to. I laugh every time he does this!
