(4,847 posts)As a kid, I often played in a tree overhanging the river. One day I was reading there and a blue heron landed right below me. I was in awe.

(45,976 posts)The eye. He was only about a foot away, flashed red throat at me. I still think of hummingbird is my spirit animal. But I do have a similar story. Ive seen a great blue heron with my grandfather when I was about the same age on the beach.

(13,317 posts)Working out in the gardens and yard they are constant companions. I talk to them
they get used to you after a while and dont view you as a threat
pretty friendly then. Ive had mamma robins introduce their fledglings to us, letting the little ones know were ok.
But must say all the birds are so much appreciated, from keeping the gardens less buggy to the wonderful symphonies they play in the duskiness and dew of the early morning.

Chickadees, Tufted Titmice, White and Red Breasted Nuthatches, Goldfinches, Purple Finches, Cardinals (Manfred and Claudia), and Rose Breasted Grosbeaks are the most regular visitors. Crows. Blue Jays. Turkey Vultures. The occasional Bald Eagle.
We do have a special spot in our hearts for the Hermit Thrushes in the woods on our property, whose piping in the morning and at dusk are transcendent.

(10,073 posts)Add California quail and osprey, if asking for 3 species.
Fond of ravens (big crows) too.
Been watching for condors several years now, live 11 mile drive from Yurok Reservation and about 15 as-a crow-flies where condors are released.

(24,287 posts)All woodpeckers, really. Hummers, jays, steller's jays, blue jays, scrub jays, bush tits, painted bunting, western blue bird... the list goes on and on. In short, I prefer small birds as opposed to larger. (Also towhees, cardinals, etc.)
