From your link:

“Is legendary cable television network MTV shutting down for good?

Not the one you're thinking of, no. The normal MTV network indeed will not shut down after New Year's Eve, despite some rumors suggesting the television station was about into the history books.

It's a group of the network's music-only channels that is going off the air.

According to Rolling Stone, many of the MTV music-only channels across the globe are shuttering after Dec. 31. While those specific channels are going away, the flagship MTV channel will not be affected by the changes.”

MTV shutting down music TV channels after nearly 40 years

Published: Dec. 31, 2025, 2:10 p.m.
By Matt Durr | mattdurr@mlive.com

Nearly 40 years after debuting in the United Kingdom, MTV is retiring several of its channels there. According to BBC News, MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV and MTV Live will no longer be available after Dec. 31, 2025.

MTV launched in the U.S. in 1981 and expanded to Europe in 1987, which included broadcasting in the U.K. A decade later, MTV added a dedicated channel for the U.K. A spokesperson for MTV’s parent company, Paramount, declined to comment on the matter.

MTV HD will remain an option for viewers in the U.K., but will not show music videos. MTV HD stopped airing music videos in 2011 and will move forward with a focus on reality TV series. Although the channels are disappearing in the U.K., it appears the U.S. versions will be unaffected.

Rolling Stone reports certain MTV channels in Australia, Poland, France and Brazil are also expected to shut down, but MTV officials did not respond to requests for confirmation.

Emphasis added by me.

4. I remember how many songs MTV ruined for me

Adding visuals to music hurt the music. Made the lyrics seem more specific and less poetic.

And then it burned through every retro and current fashion in 12 months -- thin black ties, lounge jackets, poodle dog hair, flock of seagulls hair, pat benetar hair, greasy Rockabilly hair, spandex, jeans, sequins, on and on. As each band tried to find a look to stand out they just made the whole thing more of an amoeba.

5. Thank you. That was my complaint as well

A well-crafted song paints images in the listener's mind that are far better than what a video can present. But wth the advent of MTV, the imagination became shackled to just the images presented in the videos.

7. Exactly. Music isn't about what a string looks like when it is vibrating at 440 hz

Or what musician looks like with polyester and hairspray. Much of the most powerful music is wordless.

I think some of the most exciting visual art in decades happened with MTV music videos. “Thriller” is a great example of this. Some big-name producers and directors got involved and did stellar work.

That's when the reality bullshit really began to dominate their programming after they realized how cheaply it could be produced. At various times throughout the years I'd flip over to Mtv and I'd never see a video playing. I eventually gave up trying.

10. Ya suppose it had anything to do with, like, NOT showing music videos anymore?

I blame MTV fully for the scourge of reality TV that served us up a reality TV presidency.

When I got out of the Army and got my first civilian job, I set up my daily routine around my morning workout. I swore I wasn't going to be one of those guys who gets out of the military, and immediately balloons in weight because he no longer has daily PT. I would get up early (some military habits never die out), go for a long run, then come back to my apartment, park my weight bench in front of the TV, turn on MTV, and pump iron to the video hits.

Within a couple of months, I had abs to die for.

They only lasted about a year and a half; very hard to maintain.

And I drifted away from MTV when they starting airing things other than music videos. I remember "The State" was their first non-music program. I barely watched it, and turned it off for good not long after.
