I looked it up.

Kelley’s Heroes is based on a real heist. Eastwood took over direction. Filmed in Yugoslavia during the Cold War (1970). Clint had to inform Donald Sutherland that his wife, Kiefer’s mom, who he was going through a divorce with had been arrested for a check she wrote to the Black Panthers for hand grenades. She wrote “hand grenades” in the memo section. Sutherland dropped to the ground laughing.

A Marine Corps sniper in the WW2, was in numerous actions in the South Pacific. He was machine gunned in Saipan, severing his sciatic nerve and other wounds, spending a year in the hospital.
