in one of his Leonid McGill novels. I was in my 60's or early 70's at the time. The first book in the series came out in 2009, so the math works.

It reminds me of my high school sweetheart, whose heart I broke when we both went off to college. He had a huge impact on my life, and many years later, I wanted to reach out and thank him. Sadly, he died when his plane crashed in 2004. He was an exceptional person, brilliant and brave. I felt I was not his match, so I broke off our engagement. I wish I could say we parted on good terms, but my last memory is of him crying.
