The Grapes of Wrath is one of the finest working-class novels ever written in this country, up there with John Dos Passos' USA trilogy of several years earlier. I think Steinbeck's In Dubious Battle is even better than the Joad epic, but that's a private prejudice. The portrait of brutal and evil California agribusiness in the Grapes of Wrath is unforgettable.
