Updating my living room
I have 3 large displays of things we got over the years. I'm going to get the room painted and new carpet, been over 20 years for both. to get the work done, gotta move the furniture. To move the furniture, have to empty the cupboards. The last 2 days, we've emptied 2 cupboards, filled over 10 boxes.
I had planned to update last year, but had to put it off. I will be so glad when the room is done.

(648 posts)My husband is a flea market/yard sale person. He bought so many things over the years and while I love all the stuff, too, its getting to be a bit much. Ive been winnowing things for two years, donating to the local Humane Society thrift store. At the rate Im going, I still have 25 years left to go through it all! Good luck with your decorating and renewing!

(20,232 posts)After we retired, picked up the pace lol My dear husband passed away in 2017, and during Covid, I had a lot of time to make decisions. The stuff in the cupboards are heirlooms, gifts, things we bought because we liked them. I've sold 3 or 4 big lots to local dealers. auctioneers, had yard sales, and made donations. In 2022, I opened a vintage booth. I'm going to close it in March. I sold a lot, but all good things must end.
Have fun maintaining balance

(721 posts)Mom passed last year at 100. I was her caregiver, living in her house. Now I have to move so we can sell it, so been going through closets, kitchen stuff, clothes, dressers. Several trips to Salvation Army. I even have her dad's WWI uniform! Gonna have an estate sale sometime. Thankfully she wasn't a horder. Miss you, mom.

(24,655 posts)We went from 4 bedrooms a family and living room and big deck to 3 br, a family room and screened in porch. We had to seriously downsize. We gave away a ton of leaf bags of clothes to a church that provides housing for the homeless, sold over 300 puzzles. We had several yard sales. Several of my antiques weren't in great shape so we got rid of them and we replaced our 12 year old giant sectional couch which had been destroyed by our dog licking the fabric so much (grrr). I also donated/sold a lot of books since my bookcases were overflowing. So happy to have the cases with no books stacked on top of each other now!
I think we did really well! What we kept (plus the new couch & recliners we had to get) fits great in the new house, no crowding now and we have great places for some beautiful antique sideboards we got at an estate sale. We have a great view of the river from the top of our hill and enjoy it every day. It was totally worthwhile, though it was such a huge task. I never want to do this again, that's for sure!!!

I have a 3 br ranch, with a full basement. I like the stuff I have upstairs, and already miss looking at it I have already decided if I move, I'll take what I need. I'll have an auction and sell the rest. I've lived with clutter my whole life, and I think I'd be happier with much less.
