Winter Wizard

Here's a sketch I did early 2000's. Winter Wizard. 8" x 10" pencil sketch. Just a quick sketch, not finished, but a collector bought it. I had scanned it in and lightly colorized it. I was looking at a Michelangelo sculpture when I sketched his face. Someday I may print it out and mount it to a board and paint it in oil, and yes, finish it.

I like it just as is. 🙂

I was lucky enough to see a temporary exhibit of drawings and sketches by Michaelangelo at the Cleveland Museum of Art back in 2019. There were over 50 drawings. It was thrilling to me. I actually got chills looking at this famous master’s work, including study sketches for the famous Sistine Chapel painting. I can surely see his influence in your work.

Of course he and DaVinci, and Ruben, and Rackham, and so many others are my idols. I saw DaVinci's horse drawings in SF when I was 18. I also saw Rodin's 'The Kiss', which made me weep, and my sister chastised me for it. Oh well.

I love that I write with both hands, mirror images - backwards with the left hand. DaVinci wrote backwards and some writings had to be read in a mirror. Apparently he also had strabismus, it's theorized, which I was born with. So I relate. I was thrilled at about 8 when I read about him, and that I could write backwards with my left hand as well!

M was a bit of a weirdo though. He despised Botticelli. The history is fascinating.

It's a skill, really, as I've drawn since I was 2 or 3.

I'm a terrible marketer. I used to sell prints of Winter Wizard at sci-fi/fantasy conventions from about 2000 until 2016 or so. Not the colorized version. I suppose I could sell prints of him now.

I draw, paint, and sculpt. I had almost a two year hiatus as I had several hospitalizations. A brain aneurysm, a heart attack (broken heart syndrome - NSTMI), and then had half of my thyroid removed. I'm 61, and also have EDS, POTS, and dysautonomia, so sometimes I can do art, and sometimes I can't do anything at all. I had my 2 year old grandson today, and am exhausted. He's already drawing smiley faces with eyebrows and noses.

So I do art when I can, or anything really when I'm able.

I've taught sculpting internationally online, and at conventions, and in person, and group classes. I've also taught privately. I love teaching how to sculpt, draw, etc.
