'Everything Everywhere All at Once' dominates at SAG Awards

Last edited Mon Feb 27, 2023, 09:51 AM - Edit history (1)

The unlikely awards season juggernaut “Everything Everywhere All at Once” marched on at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday, and even gathered steam with wins not just for best ensemble, Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan but also for Jamie Lee Curtis.

The SAG Awards, often an Oscar preview, threw some curve balls into the Oscars race in a ceremony streamed lived on Netflix's YouTube page from Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles.

But the clearest result of the SAG Awards was the overwhelming success of Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert's madcap multiverse tale, which has now used its hotdog fingers to snag top honors from the acting, directing and producing guilds. Only one film ( "Apollo 13" ) had won all three and not gone on to win best picture at the Oscars.

After so much of the cast of “Everything Everywhere All at Once” had already been on the stage to accept awards, the night's final moment belonged to 94-year-old James Hong, a supporting player in the film and a trailblazer for Asian American representation in Hollywood. He brought up the ignoble yellowface history of the 1937 film “The Good Earth.”

It was a weird movie but it really wasn't that good. BlueTsunami2018 Feb 2023 #2
Maybe it's really an award for "new and different". But the cast was good too. dutch777 Feb 2023 #3

I love Michelle Yeoh and liked Jamie Lee Curtis' part but there was just something off putting to me and I never made it past about the first 45 minutes. Guess I need to give it another go.

Not to me anyway. I mean, it was ok but nothing I’d consider Best Picture worthy. Then again, I often disagree with the “Academy”.

SPOILERS

You get the idea of multiple universes after the first 45 minutes. The next 45 should complete the story. This movie is 49 minutes too long. Hot dog fingers are a kooky, fun idea but I only need to see them twice. Many of the scenes in this film are repeated ad nauseam.

As for the SAG awards, I think there were more deserving honorees. Yeoh was good but Blanchett's Tar performance was deeper on so many levels. Still need to see Viola Davis, Danielle Deadwyler and Ana de Arias to be fair. And I thought Barry Keoghan (The Banshees of Inisherin) was a better Supporting Actor than Ke Huy Quan (EEAAO).
