Victims of sexual abuse have been historically silenced and the character statement I submitted is yet another painful instance of questioning victims who are brave enough to share their experiences, Kutcher wrote in a letter to the board.
After my wife and I spent several days of listening, personal reflection, learning, and conversations with survivors and the employees and leadership at Thorn, I have determined the responsible thing for me to do is resign as Chairman of the Board, effectively immediately. I cannot allow my error in judgment to distract from our efforts and the children we serve.
He also sought to show his contrition to survivors of sexual abuse. The mission must always be the priority and I want to offer my heartfelt apology to all victims of sexual violence and everyone at Thorn who I hurt by what I did, he wrote. And to the broader advocacy community, I am deeply sorry.

Well Danny Masterson is going to jail, and now Ashton Kutcher is out of a job.

(35,657 posts)Kutcher wrote the letter for the sentencing hearing that took place just last week. So to answer your question, yes he must have known, or else he wasn't paying attention.

(36,193 posts)I give him credit for apparently learning from this experience and apologizing to survivors.

(16,261 posts)When it first blew up they said that they didn't know that those statements would be made public.
That is the real them, not this more carefully curated apology. They immediately regretted those statements insofar as everyone found out that they had made them. The major oopsie was not being careful enough in curating their public image, not the substance of their behavior -- asking leniency for a violent rapist because they valued their association with him.

(8,811 posts)The letter is supposed to help humanize you to the Judge. They are not blaming the victim, they are not trying to explain the behavior, they are trying to help the judge get to know the person before sentencing them.
A person, often a close friend asks you for your help at what is usually the lowest point in their life. The easy answer is to turn your back, the hard thing is to support your friend. I seek bad for Ashton and Mila

(35,657 posts)None of us knows what Danny Masterson said to Ashton or Mila, but they've all known each other for a lot of years.
They just weren't thinking about how it would sound if those letters ever got leaked to the public.

(6,652 posts)I havent read, and I cant get upset by a old friend saying that is not the Masterson I knew. Apparently, there was not victim blaming, denial of crimes, etc. That makes a huge difference.

(8,811 posts)I am an asshole, as each fucking dirtball insurrectionist gets convicted, I cheer for the longest sentence possible. I root for them to rot in hell. That said, they all have family and friends who know them differently than I do and hope that they have a chance to make amends for what they have done. When you are the victim of crime, or when a loved one has, it is difficult to see both sides, but when someone you know and love asks for your help and you know them as a person, it is not easy to walk away from them.
All I see is sadness here. Two people were using their money, time and celebrity to help missing and exploited children, and now because of a decision they made to help a long time friend, they are not. No one benefits from this.
