Fitness guru Richard Simmons files libel suit over 'cruel' sex change story
Richard Simmons has filed a libel lawsuit against the National Enquirer, Radar Online and their parent company, American Media, Inc., over a series of "cruel and malicious" articles that stated the fitness star had transitioned from male to female.
The stories, published between June 2016 and March 2017, reported on a "shocking sex surgery," breast implants, hormone treatments and consultations on medical castration, according to documents filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday and obtained by The Hollywood Reporter.
He is seeking an apology, retraction and an unspecified amount of compensatory and punitive damages for four counts of libel and invasion of privacy.
Simmons' complaint paints the tabloid's conduct as "particularly egregious," a cynical calculation that Simmons would not sue because he would not want to appear as bigoted against transgenders.
