That was Herbie Flowers, who was a session legend.
The reason it sound so full and smooth is he played it twice. Once on a Fender Precision bass & and again on stand-up bass.
So, he gets the smoothness & warmth from the fretless acoustic & the pop & clarity from the electric.
Of course, he needed to play both parts essentially perfectly for it to work. It worked!
