Jim Gordon, a top drummer for Eric Clapton, George Harrison and countless others who was diagnosed with schizophrenia after murdering his mother in 1983, has died.

…On June 3, 1983, after weeks of threatening behavior, Gordon bludgeoned and then stabbed his 72-year-old mother to death, claiming that voices had told him to do so. He was then officially diagnosed with schizophrenia and in 1984 was sentenced to 16 years to life in prison. The following year, he was interviewed for an extensive report in Rolling Stone, in which he described the voices he’d heard in his head for most of his life, and said that he’d “had no interest in killing” his mother but was “being guided like a zombie.” He was up for parole multiple times in the following years, which was denied.

It was during a conservative sweep in the judicial system when people were getting fed up with people "copping an insanity plea". They were seen as getting away with murder, so when Gordon was found guilty of beating and stabbing his mother to death, it wasn't quite crazy enough to be committed.

Eventually he was entered into a ward but was never declared fit enough for society. It's said voices in one's head is the most dangerous of mental illnesses because we don't know what they're saying and they can't be overcome until it's too late.

Listen to it loud!!
When we saw Clapton (with Santana as the opener) in '75, he opened the show with Layla.
After 3 or 4 years of not playing his old classics, he opened with his most famous tune.
The 50 minute jam of both bands at the end was awesome. Included a Latin version of Eyesight To The Blind, with Eric & Carlos trading links. Superb.
