27 yrs ago, Natalie Imbruglia released "Torn" - a cover of a song that was a 1993 hit in Denmark as "Braendt" (Burned)

Written in English in 1991 by two Americans (Anne Preven and Scott Cutler) in the band Ednaswap and an English songwriter/musician/producer (Phil Thornalley, who later produced Imbruglia's cover), it first became a European hit in Danish in 1993, then a hit in English but in Norway thanks to an American-Norwegian singer in 1996, and then an international hit when Australian actress/singer Imbruglia covered it in 1997.

Imbruglia's version first, then Lis Sørensen's (with a translation from a YouTube user of the Danish lyrics), then Trine Rein's...and then the 1995 recording by Ednaswap, and a live acoustic performance and some talk about the song on Howard Stern's show in 2000.

Burned

Now the moon lights up my neighborhood
I get up, walk around
Can't sleep anymore
I stand by the window and I see
The last bus, the last stop
And I wish dearly and hope wildly
Yes, that you are on it
And offer peace to my weary heart

Cause fear never gives in
When fear lives in soul and body
It blazes up so easily

In the heart that was burned
A thousand times before
By someone who promised all
And closed his door shut
Left me lying blue and burned
Small, scared, weak
With my dreams forsaken
Now I'm full of doubt if you are still the one
Who turns me on again
And burns me again

Now the moon lights up my neighborhood
I want to be loved
Not deserted or burned anymore
So show me who you really are

Cause fear never gives in
When fear lives in soul and body
It blazes up so easily

In the heart that was burned
A thousand times before
By someone who promised all
And closed his door shut
Left me lying blue and burned
Small, scared, weak
With my dreams forsaken
Now I'm full of doubt if you are still the one
Who turns me on again
And burns me again

Burned

Cause fear never gives in
When fear lives in soul and body
It blazes up so easily

In the heart that was burned
A thousand times before
By someone who promised all
And closed his door shut
Left me lying blue and burned
Small, scared, weak
With my dreams forsaken
Now I'm full of doubt if you are still the one
Who turns me on again
And burns me again
And leave me lying blue and burned
Small, scared, weak
With my dreams forsaken
In the heart that was burned

Burned

the heart that was burned
In the heart that was burned

The version that was a hit in Norway in 1996, from Trine Rein.

The recording released in 1995 by American band Ednaswap, four years after they wrote the song with an English producer:

And in 2000, live on Howard Stern's show, Anne Preven talking about the song and writing the lyrics:

I like all the versions. It's a fantastic song. I'd had no idea there were so many early versions until the other day. highplainsdem Oct 30 #2

That original version by Ednaswap is really good, too.
That acoustic version is nice, too.
