It seems to me it was about the same time as Eddie and the Cruisers, another movie about a made up band. Some good original songs came out of both movies. Naybe the lyrics but not the melody.. But there was rhis one too

Eddie & The Cruisers was early to mid 80s. TTYD came out in the mid 90s.
For the Eddie movies, there was an actual band with a recording contract playing those songs.
In TTYD, it's all studio cats, though both the guys that play guitar & bass in the movie are accomplished players. Steve Zahn actually played guitar & sang in Saving Silverman.
