(70,510 posts)I've told this story here before, but what the heck.
I was on business in Frankfurt, Germany staying at the Frankfurter Hof.
Had an engineer from R&D with me and we're walking down the hall to our rooms when a guy passes us with 2 kids.
He says to me "That guy looks familiar " I said "Yeah, that's Frank Zappa."
The next morning, I'm heading to the restaurant and see Frank sitting by himself in the atrium reading the USA Today International.
I went over to say hi & told him "I really like your Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar series." He says "You must be a musician. They're the only people that tell me that!" And he chuckled.
He then asks if I've had breakfast and I said "Not yet." He tells me to have a seat.
So, we spent 45 minutes talking music, guitars, and baseball. (Yeah, baseball.) He was also interested in what I did for a living. He kind of lit up when I told him him I was a research chemist.
As I have to leave for a meeting, I get up and grab the check. He says "No, leave it. I've got this."
So Frank Zappa bought me breakfast in Germany. A year or 2 later he died.
Right place; right time.

(282 posts)My Buddy Gary was a great artist and a huge Zappa fan. He met Frank in Phoenix in the mid 80s and had him sign some of his Zappa artwork. Unfortunately, we lost Gary earlier this year to the opioid/fentynal crisis. 🥲
