Steve Harwell, the former lead singer of the band Smash Mouth, died Monday after battling medical issues for several years, according to the band’s Instagram account. He was 56.

Band manager Robert Hayes told Rolling Stone that Harwell died at his home in Boise, Idaho, “surrounded by family and friends.”

(CNN) — Steve Harwell, the 56-year-old former lead singer of the rock group Smash Mouth, is receiving hospice care at his home, the band’s manager said Sunday.

“Although Steve is here with us still, sadly it will only be for a short time,” Smash Mouth manager Robert Hayes said in a statement to CNN, noting Harwell’s fiancée is also by his side.

No further details on Harwell’s medical condition were provided. “We would hope that people would respect Steve and his family’s privacy during this difficult time,” Hayes said.

Harwell was a founding member and longtime lead singer of Smash Mouth, best known for its chart-topping singles “All Star” and “I’m a Believer.”

Steve Harwell, who sang lead for Smash Mouth until his retirement in 2021, has entered hospice care as he struggles with late-stage liver failure, his manager confirmed on Sunday night.

“Steve is resting at home being cared for by his fiancé and hospice care,” Robert Hayes told The Daily Beast in a statement. “My only additional comment is that we would hope that people would respect Steve and his family’s privacy during this difficult time.”

Hayes told Billboard that though “Steve is here with us still, sadly it will only be for a short time.” An unnamed rep for the band estimated to Entertainment Weekly that the 56-year-old has “only a week or so to live.”

Harwell’s declining health was first reported earlier on Sunday by TMZ, which attributed his liver failure to years of substance abuse.
