This annual cicada (aka dog-day cicada) was perched on my patio umbrella this morning. The annuals are distinct from the periodical cicadas that emerge every 13 to 17 years. Periodical cicadas are black with red eyes, red legs, and red wing veins.

that particular one is freshly emerged. Have you ever watched that process - very cool, and they are a brilliant chartreuse to start - you caught a new hatch!
