(9,927 posts)regarding glass frog eggs, there is a species of fly that lays their eggs on the egg mass and the larva hatch quickly and eat the developing embryos of the glass frogs. there are wasps that also eat the eggs. when insects land on or near the eggs, the males will kick them off.

(7,880 posts)leave the eggs to get food?
Gato Moteado
(9,927 posts)...eggs hatch in anywhere from a week and a half to four weeks.
there are insects everywhere in the tropics....i don't think they have to leave to eat.

(18,646 posts)All he has to do is stick out that long sticky tongue when food comes flying by...or alights in his vicinity. Great system for keeping the eggs safe without his having to go without nourishment.

(84,310 posts)The glass frog. I can see why. And it looks like its batches of eggs, too!
Simply Remarkable subject. And terrific photos of it also! What a delicate creature. How many hours were you waiting and watching for shots like these?
These belong in a full-color nature book, or a picture book about amphibians. Just REMARKABLE!!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH for sharing them here!!!

Both of the frogs have a reddish spot on their backs. Do you know the significance of that?

(9,927 posts)...i noticed that too and assumed it was one of their organs, but i don't know for sure.

(37,867 posts)that I've seen something here on du that I've never even imagined existed. The other was on SCE's regular Sunday thread. Can you imagine such a pattern!?
The fact that you found this little guy guarding the eggs makes it all the more special. He's doing his bit for the fambly.
Thanks for posting these; I always, always read your threads.

(9,927 posts)...there are some surreal frogs here.....most of them are on the caribbean coast.....i need to make more trips to that coast to get more pics.
but glass frogs are everywhere here, pretty much. i'm up at 5000 feet right now and i can hear the fleischmann's glass frogs whistling right now outside. for tiny little frogs they are loud.
here is what they look like:
