The Expanse - is it worth watching?

I'm always on the lookout for a good fantasy show, and the reviews I've read suggest that the Expanse should be a good option for me. The problem is that I've tried to get through the pilot twice, and it's just not doing it for me. Does it get better? My biggest gripe is that it throws so much at you from the start that it's almost impossible to keep track of all the different characters, alliances, settings, etc.

There are a lot of sci-fi series and movies out there. There is some quality about this one that is .... different. I can't quite put my finger on what that is to describe to you.

I watch it on what I call my "Saturday Morning Sci-Fi", where I catch up on whatever current series has a new episode (and tune out News and the real world completely for a few hours).

Last week was too busy, so today I had 2 episodes of Expanse. That is my only complaint, I prefer to binge watch series, and dislike having to wait a week. So if you have 4 complete and one incomplete season to watch, I envy you!

I had the same reaction to Game of Thrones, but once I got over the initial hump, I was glad I did.

I stopped watching after the first three episodes when it initially started because it just wasn’t doing it for me. Very glad I went back and caught up when it moved to Amazon. The series is very good.

It's one of those 'near-future' type sci-fi shows, imagining the solar system slowly being colonized about 100 years or so from now.

They stick to what's known already about spending time in space (bone/muscle density loss) and imagine a few generations living out there, and the likely conflicts to come out of it.

The belters are descendants of the people that helped build the stations and mine resources, but can't live on any of the planets because of they can't handle the gravity anymore.

The martians are an colony that claimed independence from earth, and don't trust the home planet.

The only real fantastic elements in the show are 1, the drive invented to quickly speed around the solar system, and 2, the wormhole gate system created by ancient aliens to allow for interstellar travel.

Because people are still gonna be people, you have all the drama and conflicts you'd expect, kind of like the wild west in space.

Oh, and they don't take themselves too seriously, and commissioned a song or 2 for the show in belter lingo, like this one that I love...and couldn't stop laughing at the scene in the show where they introduced it!

This is all great information and exactly what I was looking for. I'm definitely going to give it another shot and will be sure to be more patient with the first few episodes.

It is one of the best SciFi shows on TV. There are very few really good SciFi TV shows available. Another good one is Raised By Wolves on HBOMax. Stick with it if you enjoy SciFi.
