I was in the ad business when it debuted. Jaws literally dropped in creative departments around the world (that takes some doing, BTW). Special meetings and viewings were called to discuss it in days that followed. Ridley Scott became a superstar director overnight. And ad agency Chiat/Day suddenly became the place where everyone wanted to work.
To this day it represents a standard in originality and risk-taking from which all other ads are measured. I doubt we'll ever see another Super Bowl ad quite like it.
