to win the heavyweight championship making him The Cinderella Man, according to Damon Runyon. Ron Howard chose to portray Baer as a womanizing brute in the movie. Baer did accidentally kill a man in the ring, and was happy go lucky, but he was generally considered a nice guy.
Braddock defended the title only once, losing to Joe Louis in June 1937.

I read that when James Garner left the Rockford Files, they considered Max as his replacement. I think it would have worked.
