Many years ago my wife got so mad at the cable company we cut the cord. We have a ten year old tv and I picked up a roku streaming device. So we got some free stuff and we subscribed to Acorn and Prime. I wanted TCM and news channels so eventually we picked up sling tv. I'm pretty loathe to change anything but years ago I remember Clark Howard saying youtube tv was the best streaming deal. Roku and youtube were having a fight for the last six months but I read a couple of days ago it was settled, so I said to Sarah: Let's switch!
So as of last night we have youtube tv. Sarah wanted HBO for some reason, so I cancelled prime and acorn.
So far I'm really impressed
20 bucks more than sling for all the networks plus a ton of sports channels plus all the stuff I watched on sling plus a lot of other stuff. 65 a month. Not the deal Clark Howard was pushing years ago but not too bad. The stuff we cancelled will cover the costs of HBO max plus about 5 HBO channels. Apparently Sarah will have me watching Bill Maher 24/7 for the next few months.
Being a technophobe, I had a problem getting the local channels to work. I was worried the tv was too old. But I thought about it overnight and thought: Maybe the problem was with the Roku. Sure enough, I restarted the Roku and that was all that I needed to pick up the local network channels.
So now we have tv channels up the wazoo for not much more than we were paying and still no cable company to hassle us. Youtube tv still seems like an ok deal.

(3,075 posts)I had a Sling Blue and Orange package plus Hollywood add on trial for a month, for $10 a month more I get all the channels I was getting plus a bunch more with yt tv...I am still getting HBO Max because I got a half price for 6 months deal and I get prime for the shipping discounts and video (I also got it for a half price deal for at least a year). I got the Hulu one year for 99 cents a month and I contribute to PBS $5 for access to their library of past shows. I have way way more to watch than I need but happy for now...Probably will cancel HBO after the holidays (I want to see the new Matrix film and still don't go out to movies or restaurants).

(4,600 posts)I was angry with Cox Cable a few years ago,,,, we already had a Roku device,,,, at the time I "gave up" HGTV and HallMark channel but now they've added those and increased the price but all in all it was an easy transition. We have Amazon Prime plus we pay for Netflix,,,, we have had more than enough to watch during the pandemic.

(31,770 posts)All of NBC Universal — MSNBC, Comcast, NBC, etc.— could go away. It came close to ending a few months ago. Argument was over money, of course.

(7,611 posts)you the local PBS. Actually here in CT it looks like you get two PBS channels, probably CT and NYC.
Actually, I may never get to find out if youtube tv is any good. We only have one tv in the bedroom and my wife has hogged it to watch HBO max for the last 24 hours.
