Are You Being Served?

I love this show. I don't know if it ever really got popular here, but it was hilarious ... full of innuendoes you'd never hear here. Was lucky enough to meet John Inman (Mr. Humphries). He appeared at a shopping center in San Jose and I arrived late. Didn't think anyone would show up. Was I wrong. The line was a mile long. Inman, after meeting people in a store, walked down the line and shook everyone's hand, including mine.

Here's an episode. Enjoy.

4. This show is what got me into British comedy

When I was a kid it was on PBS and my Mom loved (loves) it. We still ask each other, “Are you free?” and do the pointless glance around bit before saying, “Yes, I’m free.”

Then came Fawlty Towers and Black Adder. She didn’t like those as much but I was hooked.

I always look forward to Ms. Slocumb's pussy references. Love double entendres!

On PBS. Part of my, "There's comedy and then there's BRITISH comedy!" phase.

8. Back in the days when my household was still broadcast-only TV, we watched tons of PBS

when we did watch TV, which was perhaps less than other households of our peers.

And so we watched many, many episodes of this show. Loved it.

That said, because it was all reruns broadcast daily(?) but viewed intermittently, I doubt I've ever seen more than a couple episodes in a row in the proper order.

My dad and I loved this show. We'd watch it every night on PBS at 7/7:30. I remember makimg bets with him just before an episode started - what color hair will we see on Mrs. Slocombe?

My dad eventually got the entire series on DVD. He loaned it to me in the earlier days of the pandemic. He passed away this August and it's nice to see these episodes and remember all of our inside jokes. Thank you for sharing!

15. I named my last semi-feral kitty Mollie

I named her after Mollie Sugden who plays Mrs Slocombe.

My Mollie is a Calico so she has multicolored fur like Mrs Slocombe.

I didn't know what Mrs Slocombe's first name was at the time, so Mollie was chosen. I didn't want to name her Mrs Slocombe.

I have learned from Wikipedia that her full name was Mary Elizabeth Jennifer Rachel Abergavenny Slocombe (née Yiddell), known as Betty.

Her Pussy was named "Tiddles".

17. One of the great shows from my childhood.

Mrs Slowcombes pussy and Benny Hill were standard fare for me and my 3 younger siblings and my parents in the early 70s. Yet a few years later my parents would get all awkward about sex scenes in movies. And signed onto a high school ban on Monty Python's Life of Brian. Hypocrites.

18. If you love AYBS, you should check out "Allo, 'Allo" another great British sitcom

from the same writers. It is full of gag lines and hilarious physical comedy. It is even more of a farce than AYBS. Available on Prime.
