(31,770 posts)Shirley Jones, in her autobiography, wrote that Cassidy wanted to focus on stage and film, and considered a recurring role on television to be somewhat beneath his talents. He would soon regret the decision, and it haunted him until he passed. He did guest star in a MTM episode as Baxter's older brother. I think he would have been a great Ted Baxter and would have played him less clownish and with a more reasonable sense of hubris.

(10,344 posts)I'm not sure he would have. But here's Cassidy's guest spot on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show." It's the closest we got to see him in the role. I looked for screen tests and I couldn't find any.
