Actor Jack Cassidy was #BornOnThisDay,March 5, 1927. Remembered for his film/tv roles, ...

And often cited as the best Columbo villain. I saw him in the episode where he was the Great Santini just last week.

Actor Jack Cassidy was #BornOnThisDay,March 5, 1927. Remembered for his film/tv roles, his marriage to actress Shirley Jones & as the father of singer #DavidCassidy. A chronic alcoholic & a smoker he passed in 1976 (age 49) from a fire caused by his cigarette. #RIP #GoneTooSoon

He was the murderer in one of my fave Columbo episodes, "Now You See Him" (the one where he played the magician who used to be a Nazi guard in the war).

Shirley Jones, in her autobiography, wrote that Cassidy wanted to focus on stage and film, and considered a recurring role on television to be somewhat beneath his talents. He would soon regret the decision, and it haunted him until he passed. He did guest star in a MTM episode as Baxter's older brother. I think he would have been a great Ted Baxter and would have played him less clownish and with a more reasonable sense of hubris.

I'm not sure he would have. But here's Cassidy's guest spot on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show." It's the closest we got to see him in the role. I looked for screen tests and I couldn't find any.
