Is it completely depressing? Will I want to commit Seppuku after every episode? Or is there hope involved in this series?
My psyche cannot handle another absolute downer of a show.
Thanks
PS There are two reasons why I haven't watched Game of Thrones. One, I heard that you had not get attached to a character unless you want your heart snatched out and two, the ending sucked.

(24,149 posts)Yes, it was depressing, so very depressing, but she never gave up. She got out in the end of the book and that was such a hopeful message. I know the show goes a lot further since my son told me that and I do want to get to that part. Its just seeing it is so much more real than reading it. It affects me a lot more. I haven't been able to watch an episode since the 4th one. There's just too much bad depressing stuff going on and I see the US as being more like that every day and it makes me sick! I will watch the rest, eventually, when my personal life isn't hell and I am not in total fear for our democracy.

(2,630 posts)It's interesting because you get inside look at development of Gilead from Aunt Lydia's perspective, and meet June again.

(106,340 posts)The lead actress (Elisabeth Moss) is quite good and I liked her in other productions including Mad Men. So, I've thought about trying to go back and watch. But then came the SCOTUS decision and I just find it too painful and anger-producing.
If those who have followed the entire series can convince me otherwise, I'd gladly rethink, but...

(5,899 posts)excessive horror. I am glad I read, then watched it before now. I would like to think people between the ages of 18-35 would see it though. And I imagine they would handle it well enough.

(10,790 posts)and as others have said, Elisabeth Moss is outstanding.
I'll finish watching it. It is so depressing because it's happening for real, right now. The part of the first season which shocked me most was the flashbacks. I'd been thinking "that's not far enough in the future for all that to have happened" then the flashback scenes showed it was indeed possible.
I forget which season, but in one episode a college professor is warned to remove pictures etc of her wife. The day I watched that one, when I sat down at the computer to read the news, one of the prominent headlines on DU was of a school in TX (I think, maybe FL) that was purging gay professors. Coincidence, yes, but the same events in the show were literally happening.
If someone wants to watch tv for entertainment, I completely see why they'd not watch.
But I think it should be mandatory viewing for the entire country. It's not entertainment, it's a warning. Because it's happening right now and we're all gonna endure it whether we watched the fictional show or not.

(21,957 posts)Since I watch tv for entertainment, I will skip this. Hell, I wasn't even able to finish The Boys because he is such an evil person. I guess I am more of a Princess Bride sort of person. It's probably why most of my viewing pleasure is derived from anime.
