Those cameras weighed a large amount... the driver side doors were probably welded shut to support the camera mount platforms.
Just a guess... obviously I don't know for sure.

(95,239 posts)I have seen driving manuals in a couple states where they recommended entering your vehicle from the passenger's side to avoid stepping into the traffic lane. Most cars and pick ups had bench seat at the time.

(43 posts)a) Cars had bench seats that were easy for driver to slide across
b) Entering on passenger side meant the driver didn't have to stand out in the roadway (which was likely to be narrow in those days) and open up the giant door that cars had back then. It was therefore much safer for the driver (and other drivers) for driver to enter the car from the sidewalk and slide over to the drivers seat. That show had a lot of subtle safety teaching.
