Complaint on Arizona candidate's North Carolina registration came too late, lawsuit claims

A candidate for a state legislative seat in the southeast Valley says a lawsuit challenging his eligibility to serve came 126 days too late and should be dismissed.

Michael Way won his Republican primary July 30, nominating him for one of two House seats in Legislative District 15.

Nearly three weeks later, Deborah Kirkland, a resident of the district, filed a lawsuit noting Way did not meet eligibility standards that require a legislative candidate to have lived in Arizona for the three years immediately prior to the election.

Way voted in North Carolina in 2022, according to records from that state, which suggests he was a North Carolina resident at the time.
