Well collapse leaves Arkansas town without water source
CARTHAGE Officials say the only well serving a small Arkansas town has collapsed, leaving residents without a water source.
Dallas County Emergency Management Director Cary Dunn said Thursday a stopgap emergency well could be completed within three to six months, but the full well likely wont be repaired for a year.
Dunn says a 400-gallon water tank has been delivered while the towns approximately 385 residents wait for an even larger 5,000-gallon tank. He also says the local Walmart donated pallets of bottled water, which is being distributed by the Carthage Fire Department.
Dunn contacted state emergency management after discovering the collapse Wednesday and declared a local disaster for Carthage. Officials estimate each resident will need about two gallons of water daily, which theyll have to fetch from the tank.
Carthage is 47 miles southwest of Little Rock.
