California will stay masked for another month

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California won’t lift its mask requirement until June 15 to give the public and businesses time to prepare and ensure cases stay low, the state health director said Monday, a decision that runs counter to many other states including Oregon and Washington that quickly aligned with last week's new federal guidelines.

“This four-week period will give Californians time to prepare for this change, while we continue the relentless focus on delivering vaccines particularly to underserved communities and those that were hard hit throughout this pandemic,” Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly said.

The timing aligns with California Gov. Gavin Newsom's earlier announcement that if cases remain low, the state will drop nearly all COVID-19 restrictions on June 15.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention altered its mask guidelines last week, saying it’s safe for fully vaccinated people to skip face coverings and social distancing in virtually all situations. The CDC guidelines say all people should still wear masks in crowded indoor locations such as airplanes, buses, hospitals and prisons.

There's still a lot of variation in vaccine coverage, despite the efforts to promote equity. RockRaven May 2021 #2

But I think compliance will go down some. Compliance has been pretty much 100% in my county. It will be interesting to see how this goes.

I was looking at my county's data today. Countywide about 3/4 of adults (16+) have gotten a first dose (and 3/4 of those are fully vaccinated). In my town the first dose rate was about 80%. The towns on either side of mine were 100% and 50%. I'll give you one guess which is the uber wealthy/very white town and which is the less affluent/underserved/higher minority one.

We've still got a lot of public health work to do at the county, city, neighborhood level.
