Union workers plan protest against 'corporate greed' outside Disneyland

Some Disneyland Resort workers will protest Saturday near the Happiest Place on Earth, accusing Disney of reaping billions in tax breaks while giving its “cast members” the short shrift.

“It’s frustrating that an employer who received $1.6 billion in Trump-era tax breaks, and whose stock is hitting all-time highs, has not gotten the memo that the cost of labor — and of everything else — has gone up,” said David Huerta, president of the Service Employees International Union – United Service Workers West.

As Disneyland and California Adventure get back to full operations, 40% of the workers laid off during the pandemic have yet to be called back, Huerta said. And in contract negotiations currently underway, Disney is still coming to the table with “poverty wages,” he said.

Disney’s pay practices garnered criticism after Yeweinishet “Weini” Mesfin, a night janitor at Disneyland Resort, was found dead in her Honda Civic in 2016. She had been living in her car for years. She was 61 and making about $14 an hour.
