California's disappearing salmon

The 325-mile upstream trip from the Golden Gate to the Shasta Dam used to end with birth as the Chinook spawned and died. Too often now, facing drought and too many dams, the salmon is just facing death.

Rules protecting salmon, steelhead, and other species are seen by many in big agriculture, the other extractive industries, and even developers in Southern California as an obscene impediments to their own exploitation of water. They’re quietly rooting for extinction so that barrier to their a avaristic goals can be met. Every little impediment they can put in the way of species protection gets them further to their goal. It’s just disgusting.
