and we should be in peak summer, with waves of 100+ degree days and not a rain cloud in sight for months. This is weird...I've lived here since 1979 and this is truly weird.

and we got a fair amount here. Not enough to put a dent in the drought, but nice anyway.

It does come with one caveat, though. There's thunder and lightning with it. Keeping fingers crossed the lightning doesn't spark any fires.

An uptick in moisture related to the North American monsoon might be enough bring general thunderstorms to interior Southern California in the coming days with the potential that coastal areas from the Mexico border to the mountains north of Los Angeles get their first shower or thunderstorm since May or June, AccuWeather meteorologists say.

Rain along the Southern California coast is rare during the summer and early autumn, but the weather pattern may send some rain to the region by next week. The anticipated widely separated thunderstorm activity is highly unlikely to impact the long-term drought, but some roads may become slick, and flash flooding could visit some communities well inland, forecasters warn.

The last measurable rain in Downtown Los Angeles was on June 22, the first full day of astronomical summer, when a mere 0.01 of an inch of rain fell. Parts of the Southern California coast have not had anything more than a few drops of rain since the spring. The last general soaker in the Los Angeles area was on April 21-22, when 0.10 to 0.50 of an inch of rain fell.

-snip-

"At this time, there is nothing to indicate that a thorough soaking is coming to San Diego, Los Angeles and other coastal cities and towns in the region over the next five to seven days," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Heather Zehr said. "But, there will be an attempt by the atmosphere to bring at least spotty thunderstorms over the Southern California deserts and some nearby mountains beginning as early as Wednesday night and Thursday."
