Story by Allyson Vergara,
Temeculas youth are protesting a new resolution banning the teaching of critical race theory in schools.
Hundreds of students from Great Oak High School participated in a peaceful walkout from classes Friday morning, Dec. 16. The teenagers were speaking out against the critical race theory ban passed by a new conservative majority on the Temecula Valley Unified school board this week.
Sienna Andrade, a Great Oak senior and student body co-president, called the resolution a way of censoring history, and said she does not think its necessary if CRT is not being taught in schools.
This is a student-run movement, said Andrade, 17. Students are more outspoken and involved; we want to stand up for what we believe in. We have the right to make change and have our voices heard.
The school boards 3-2 vote to prohibit critical race theory in classrooms came after a contentious meeting that ended early Wednesday, Dec. 14. The three trustees who voted to approve the ban Joseph Komrosky, Danny Gonzalez and Jen Wiersma were part of a new conservative Christian board majority sworn in at the meeting.
