Potential Category 4 atmospheric river to hit Northern California

Southern California experienced a drastic drop in temperatures on Monday, with wet weather expected through the week, while a powerful winter storm hit Northern California started late Monday and brought several inches of rain and heavy winds.

An atmospheric river, or a weather system that moves high concentrations of water vapor outside of the tropics, could on Tuesday bring up to 1 to 3 inches of rain to the coastal areas, with higher elevations receiving upward of 3 to 5 inches, the National Weather Service told CBS San Francisco. The atmospheric river could be as strong as a Category 4, with a scale that tops out a 5.

Accompanied by a medley of weather alerts, a surging jet stream pushed the powerful winter storm system toward California's Bay Area on Monday, CBS San Francisco reported. The National Weather Service issued a series of updated warnings targeting communities in the area, including a flood watch for cities like San Francisco, Watsonville, Pacifica, Santa Cruz, Scotts Valley and Boulder Creek. Those warnings took effect late on Monday night and are currently set to remain active through Tuesday afternoon.

By Tuesday morning, experts forecasted that significant runoff from surrounding mountain ranges could bring flooding to rivers, creeks, streams and low-lying areas, the weather service said in an advisory, adding that flooding could occur in urban areas as well as areas with poor drainage systems. Storm drains and ditches could become clogged with debris, the weather service warned.

Potential floods due to King Tides as well. So glad I live on a stable hill top.

The loop is to reflect realtime atmospheric conditions for aviation workers and data users.

It was quite different when the article was written, the atmospheric river was quite distinct, hadn't mad landfall yet, really early this am.

I check this site before anything else in the morning and several time during eventful days.

Currently, in western Montana, it's been +50F since noon yesterday with high winds and rain. So much for our early buildup of snowpack. That will all be flowing downriver now.

Yeah, I'd like to see from around midnight when the rain really started here. Last several months I was seeking that same view (IR, east pacific) but historical. I guess I'd have to figure how to capture the gifs then stitch them together myself. If there was an archive, somewhere.

For the data but there may be one. I have wished for prior info many times myself but never took the initiative to look for it.

Lots of links at the bottom of the page, might be something there.

I think it was around the time of hurricane Ian. Tried lots of links on that page and others. Never did find what I wanted, but admit it wasnt exhaustive

For example, I think that loop has 15 hour points, but I'd like to see the prior 15 as well, or 30 or 50. Like an historical archive where you can select the time frame yourself? I'm sure it must exist somewhere.

It takes me 6 hours to figure out how to adjust a setting on my tablet. I am lucky I can even get to the same site more than once. Some tech guru must know how to do it. I am a tech dummy.

Great stuff Biden is doing with the weather. We now have real cold temperatures for winter. Translation: Blueberries will boom!

We need to have a few weeks of deep subzero temps to kill off the bark beetles that are eating our forests.
