For a single morning in June 2022, downtown San Francisco was brought to a standstill as the Warriors championship parade rolled down Market Street.
Now picture the same level of restrictions, closures and carmageddon occurring across downtown, but for six consecutive days. And instead of Steph Curry popping bottles of champagne, the celebrated guests are the presidents and prime ministers from 21 countries including President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) conference descends upon San Francisco from Nov. 11 to 17, and is expected to upend transit and travel in pockets throughout downtown, with most the impact Nov. 14 through 19. More than 20,000 people are expected to attend.
The Department of Homeland Security and the Secret Service are leading security preparations for the event and announced this week that APEC is a National Special Security Event. Its the 75th time theyve enacted such a high level of security, and its on par with an event like a presidential inauguration.
