Wolf hybrid on the loose in the Bay Area captured, reunited with owners
Nov. 6, 12:30 p.m. Shadow, a two-year-old wolf hybrid that ran away from his home in Santa Rosa over the weekend, was captured and reunited with his owner Monday morning after days of searching.
Mark Scott, executive director of North Bay Animal Services, said reports of the canine, which is twice the size of a husky started flooding in Sunday afternoon. Scott and animal control officer Emily Crumm and Sebastopol police were able to locate Shadow and attempted to remove him from the center divide of Highway 12 by creating a traffic barrier and coaxing him onto Merced Avenue, which led to the property where he lives. He had been on the run since Wednesday, according to his owners.
Unfortunately, there was a huge field nearby with 280 acres of land, so we were out there until around 9 or 10 oclock last night trying to get him to go toward the owners other dogs, Scott told SFGATE over the phone Monday, noting Shadow gets along with other animals and was not displaying any aggressive behavior. He was too much in flight mode, and it was rainy and dark so we decided to let him stay where he was and try again this morning.

I had a Newfie-wolf mix. Not much wolf but enough to have significant intelligence. I did not have him by choice but he proved to be unadaptable to others and bonded hard to me as his pack. He was found on a local reservation. His other choice was euthanasia.
Wolves learn by watching and will teach themselves things unlike dogs. He taught his self to retrieve my shoes and put them at my feet without me ever telling him to do so. He just knew when I needed them. He also returned them to their place when I took them off. He would freak me out that way. I dropped my other dog's leash and he picked it up and walked him.
He also turned on me once after we moved and cornered me against the kitchen counter letting me know he was not happy. I had to avert eye contact. He was easily over 120lbs.
Blessings that this being is safe.
What a privilege to know such a critter.
What happened to him?

(1,445 posts)from being tied to a tree in 100 degrees and receiving multiple beatings. I went over to the home and told him I was going to call the police or Pound (at the time a kill holding facility until I helped the community organize to build a no-kill) The drunk man came to my door and surrendered him. He was about 1 year old. I named him Aman. No one would adopt him due to his behavior. I kept him.
He wanted to go outside quickly one morning and I walked him outside his run as he had been having lameness and other issues so did not run. He fell to the ground and bled out in front of me. My heart broke. Ruptured hidden abdominal cyst? they thought. They are hard to see. He was only about 11-12. My lovely boy.
Found out he was part wolf when I had a specialist drive up to fix a cruciate ligament. It all made sense at that point. Took 5 of us to hold him down to give him a shot to calm him. The pill did not work.
I was blessed. I was truly truly blessed.
The vet said I did something very special in loving him.
It has been about 7 years now since he has left me. Miss telling him to "crack a smile" and watching him bar his teeth.
