California City holds special election on tax measure, targets public safety

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — California City held a special election Tuesday to decide on a special property tax.

Called Measure B, the tax, for six years, would be put on each parcel within city boundaries and set aside money solely for police, fire and emergency medical services.

Revenue would be split between the Police Special Tax Fund and Fire/EMS Special Tax Fund. The debate is over if the tax would actually improve public safety.

Kern Elections said ballots are still being counted, but so far, 64% of voters have said no to the new tax measure, while about 36% have voted yes.
