Berkeley ballots to feature a dozen local measures this November
The City Council has finalized language for a slew of local ballot measures, including a new tax on natural gas use and proposals to raise money for homeless services, street paving, parks and libraries. The councils final meeting before recess on Monday was dedicated to one of a pair of ballot measures concerned with rent control and tenant-landlord relations.
There will be a dozen Berkeley-specific ballot measures for voters to decide on this November, to say nothing of county, regional and state initiatives and candidates for political office.
Some of the ballot measures began as petitions. If a petition for an ordinance change receives enough verified signatures, the City Council has the option to adopt the changes straightaway, or put the proposal on the ballot and have voters decide whether to ratify which the council did with each of the initiative petitions it considered.
Other measures were brought forward by councilmembers and city administration, so the council still had the latitude to reject them outright.
