Vallejo mayoral election looms large after first forum

As residents pass the 60-day mark until November’s election, mayoral candidates got their first shot to set themselves apart from the pack in front of voters at Thursday night’s forum.

Hosted by Seeking Solutions in the JFK Library, the forum packed a full room, leaving only standing room for around a dozen. The four candidates — Andrea Sorce, Ravi Shankar, Pippin Dew and Dwight Monroe Jr. — were lined up in the front with one mic and different visions to share.

Although the room was packed, air thick and moving none, the 90-minute event was cordial. The audience was clearly there to listen.

When it comes to the issues, the candidates fundamentally do not disagree on much. Everyone agrees that crime is high, police staffing is low and two are certainly related. Nobody argued the fact that businesses are shuttered, homelessness in the city is at the highest it’s ever been and the city’s bureaucracy itself could be doing a lot better.
