S.F. Dems' new use for shuttered Nordstrom Rack: Kamala Harris campaign headquarters
The watch party will be in the shoe section when the site of a mothballed Nordstrom Rack opens as the storefront campaign headquarters of the San Francisco Democratic Party, just in time for Tuesdays presidential debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump.
The space, with windows on the corner of Fifth and Market streets just outside the Powell Street BART Station, occupies 45,000 square feet on two levels connected by an escalator. It has room for 1,000 or more volunteers, and Nancy Tung, chair of the San Francisco Democratic County Central Committee, expects to fill it.
There is so much energy around the presidential election because Kamala Harris is a Bay Area native that I thought it was important for people to have space to come together, said Tung, a San Francisco prosecutor who got her start in the DCCC when she was the citys district attorney. Right now the space seems big, but somebody told me if you build it they will come.
On Sunday morning, there wasnt much on the ground floor but blue and white balloons and a new set of silk screen campaign posters created by artist Marti McKee. But by Tuesday it should be set up as a phone bank. This isnt as complicated as in campaigns past because telephone lines and jacks are not required.
